  • South African legal representative and member of the global Business Operations Legal team.
  • You’ll be based in South Africa and reporting directly to the GC of Global Business Operations, with a dotted line to the South African General Counsel.
  • Pay close attention to assisting global purchasing officials and related support areas including operations, human resources, and finance as a lawful business partner for Africa procurement and supply chain and global sustainability programs.
  • Collaborate with lawyers from other parts of the world, including those in Africa, those who specialize in categories like patent law or supply chain law, and those who have expertise in areas like intellectual property.
  • A large portion of your time will be spent assisting the regional and global procurement teams with the development and checking of unique and heavily revised contracts covering a wide variety of topics.

Daily Duties and Obligations

The ideal candidate will have the following qualities:

  • Sound judgment in legal, risk management, and compliance advice.
  • Comfortable drafting, reviewing, and redrafting commercial contracts with minimum supervision/queries. Inter-company agreements, MOUs, consultancy agreements, materials purchase agreements, supplier claims (delay, quality), leases, long-term services (e.g., power purchase, build own operate), logistics and warehousing contracts, manufacturing outsourcing (3PM) contracts, and settlement agreements are common. This function interacts closely with deal-leading procurement teams.
  • Comfortable drafting, reviewing, and redrafting industrial relations and HR documentation with minimum supervision/queries. Recognition, contractor, and settlement agreements are common. This function interacts closely with HR departments leading these deals. This includes industrial action legal help.
  • Will assign and monitor multiple legal process outsourcing resources.
  • Provides hands-on, business-oriented support for significant African and global procurement deals.
  • Identifies legal risks and helps the business navigate them with creative solutions.
  • Provides advise on legal and risk issues.
  • Produces non-legal risk assessments and counseling.
  • Clearly instructs external legal service providers, contract lawyers, and law firms.
  • Establishes good governance procedures and provides support and training to ensure procurement, UniOps, and supply chain compliance.
  • Implements business and legal capability-building programs to drive excellence and efficiency.
  • Promotes and encourages strong coordination between market legal teams and Business Operations legal team to assist Business Operations operations and projects.

Factors Essential to the Job’s Success

  • Earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law; Admitted to the Bar; Has 10+ years of experience in providing legal counsel and drafting legal documents.
  • Superior drafting and legal consulting skills in English language.
  • Competence in business matters, as evidenced by past performance, and the ability to present arguments with conviction in a business setting.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts, including international sales, logistics, warehousing, real estate and equipment leasing, manufacturing outsourcing (3PM) contracts, structured transactions and renewable power projects, and raw materials and finished goods supply contracts.
  • Capacity to work well with others and convey ideas effectively, both internally and externally.
  • Possessing strong intercultural competence and emotional maturity.
  • Able to juggle a number of tasks at once and see major projects through to fruition.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Mental agility and willingness to learn new tasks.
  • Work across time zones and jurisdictions with colleagues and internal clients.
